Here are some of our favorite adventures . . .
Making Fairy Houses
My four year old just adores fairies. She loves Tinkerbell and loves imagining that she is part of the fairy world. Last summer we discovered a small nook at the bottom of the trunk of a tree in one of my gardens filled with hostas. The opening is just the right size for the entrance to a fairy house. Piper loves to decorate the fairy house using flowers from our yard; hydrangeas, black-eyed Susan’s, lily’s, bee balm, whatever may be blooming. We create tents out of colorful autumn leaves. She loves to create pathways from little stones, fences out of sticks, and beds for the fairies out of flower petals and mushrooms. I too love the magic of this imaginary fairy world. Piper and her two year old brother Brock love to run and check to see if the fairies have come. I hope that the magic of the fairies never fades for my children.
Do you have a magical spot that fairies should discover with you and your children?
Nature Walks
On our nature walks we spend time listening for birds, looking for butterflies, finding flowers, and searching for newts and salamanders.
What do you like to search for on your nature walks? What is the strangest thing you’ve ever found?
Picking Apples
Our favorite place to go apple picking is Windy Ridge Orchard in North Haverhill, NH. They have an amazing selection of apples; Honey Crisp, MacIntosh, McCoun, Cortland, Empire, and Paula Red. The orchard is set on a beautiful hillside and is a family farm that was started in 1967 by the Fabrizio Family. Windy Ridge Orchard also features a beautiful sunflower garden in the middle of the rows of apple trees bearing their delicious fruit, farm animals (goats, pigs, sheep, and donkeys) that the kids can feed, an awesome playground, a pumpkin patch, and Christmas tree farm (but we are not ready for winter yet!). After picking apples and enjoying some fun on the playground, lunch at the Cider House Cafe (they have breakfast too) is the perfect way to end the day. Their sandwiches are AMAZING! Most feature their apples and a maple mayonnaise that I have tried to recreate but have not been able to match.
Do you like to go apple picking with your kids? I’d love to have you share some of your favorite apple recipes with me!
